Traffic Offender Intervention Program
My name is Greg Langham I have been employed with Blue Circle distribution at Maldon for 8 years driving a semi trailer or b/double delivering Packaged Products throughout NSW.

I am married with 2 children and live in the Wollondilly Shire. On the 12th October 2002 my wife and I lost our 15 year old daughter Erin in a road crash. About 12 months after the accident we where put in touch with an organisation called "Enough Is Enough" who provided us with counselling and helped us through a really difficult time in our lives.

They had such an effect that my wife and I are now involved in a number of driver education programs, one of which is the "Traffic Offender Intervention Program" run at the Police citizen youth clubs. This presentation is for serious traffic offenders where we put the consequences of bad driving behaviour into prospective and try to focus the participants on taking personal responsibility for their driving behaviour. Another main focus point we use is to show the offenders that the consequences can have a greater impact than just a loss of licence or a fine. We would present 30 of these programs a year to audiences of up to 50 people which makes you realise that driving on our roads is high risk.

One of the most rewarding programs we are involved in is the "Young Driver Days" or the "U Turn the Wheel" program run for year 11 students which involve Rotary, Council, Police, Emergency Services, NRMA and a number of other volunteers who donate both time and equipment. As you can see by the attached photos the Picton High School U Turn the Wheel presentation is a very interactive demonstration where the students are always surprised by the effect speed has on increasing the chance of having an accident. The program is very unique and sends a clear message to teenagers about road safety.

It is our hope through telling Erin's story it gives a "real life" experience and reinforces the Road Safety Message.
